Home of the Chisasibi Cree Nation, where tradition meets progress in the heart of northern Quebec
The Chisasibi Cree Nation is a vibrant First Nations community located in northern Quebec, Canada. Our community was established in 1980 following the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, representing a new chapter in our people's long and rich history.
Situated at the mouth of the La Grande River where it meets James Bay, Chisasibi serves as both our traditional homeland and a modern community that balances cultural preservation with contemporary development.
Our name "Chisasibi" means "great river" in Cree, reflecting our deep connection to the waterways that have sustained our people for generations.
Our Band Council provides leadership and governance for the Chisasibi Cree Nation community
The Chisasibi Cree Nation operates under the Indian Act and is governed by an elected Band Council consisting of a Chief and Councillors who serve our community with dedication and commitment to our traditional values.
Our governance structure combines traditional Cree decision-making processes with modern administrative requirements, ensuring that community voices are heard and respected in all important decisions.
